Three “REAL” Values in Overcoming Fake Talk

Reviewer:

Stoker is visual and provides us with clear graphics to support his ideas.  Two related examples of his ability to create visual communication are on pages 59 and 79….

This is no dry textbook or extended analytical article, but an engaging and useful series of vignettes where we actually see and hear (at least in our heads, unless we read aloud) real conversations….

Actually, if you read and think about the practices outlined in this book, then put what you learned into action, you may actually find yourself creating sweeping business strategy, changing your view of human behavior, or finding your own voice for leadership and creation … or you may just find working with others to carry out your mutual goals a lot easier and more rewarding than you imagined.

REAL Useful

The best thing about John's book is that it is real. It is not just a bunch of re-purposed principles but actually provides steps and plans that will make a difference in the impact of your conversations. The acronym REAL (Recognize, Express, Ask, Listen) gives you something easy to remember, especially in a difficult conversation. Add in the many stories and examples, this book gives you the means to improve all of your relationships. And, I love the graphics!!

Overcoming Fake Talk by John R. Stoker should be absolutely required reading for anyone who communicates. And guess what? We ALL communicate! Granted, some of us communicate more than others, but communication is important to everyone.

John Stoker’s Overcoming Fake Talk does an impressive job of bridging the theortical ideas that many books offer on having meaningful dialogue with actionable real-world suggestions and examples of how his ideas can be implemented….

I finished the book in about two days, and had numerous post-it notes placed throughout to remind me to go back and spend more time on applying the many ideas, like focused listening, that he shares.

Perfect book for your Communication Toolkit. Offers lots of examples and advice that everyone can use.

Everyone needs to communicate but so many people do not know how to do it effectively. Overcoming Fake Talk by John Stoker is full of examples on how to communicate better, especially during difficult conversations. My favorite chapter is the one entitled "Why Ego Off?" It provides some great tips on receiving feedback and listening with empathy. This is a book that deserves several readings. Be prepared to mark it up and take notes along the way.

I’m sticking to my favorite chapters for this review

Reviewer: Jane Anderson

If you had to define fake talk, how would you define it? My first thought when I read the book title ‘Overcoming Fake Talk’ was the only reason to try to overcome something is if it’s having a negative effect and to continue would have negative consequences. Right? Flipping quickly through the chapter titles I was snagged. Because this entire book is both lively and imploring while covering communication extensively, I’m sticking to my favorite chapters for this review.

Admittedly, you will need to get your own copy of the book to learn all that John Stoker teaches in his book. In fact, this review can in no way do justice to the comprehensive content in this book. Imagine receiving a brand new book, beautiful cover, complimentary tributes fill the first few pages, followed by a page of outline and notes – then BLANK – the rest of the pages are blank! That’s how I want you to look at this book report. I’ll highlight my favorite pages and you read all that remain when you get your own copy of the whole book with every page a treasure of information you can use tomorrow.
